Marjan Hill: choose the walk before setting out

Marjan Hill is part of a wooded peninsula used for recreation, with walking paths, exercise routes and viewpoints. An outing here can extend a walk from the old centre or become the main activity of the day. Start by choosing between a view over Split and a longer exploration of the peninsula. Those are different plans, especially if a visit to Bene or a kayak outing is also on the agenda.

The approach from the Riva connects the city with Marjan. A described walking route passes Matejuška and Varoš before reaching the viewpoint near the old Jewish cemetery. This gives an intelligible progression from the waterfront through the city towards the wooded area. Use the old town walking guide for the urban part, and leave time to decide where to turn back rather than tying the walk to an assumed duration.

Viewpoints and a change of scenery

The views are a reason to visit even without planning an extended walk. Combine a viewpoint with time in Varoš if the main interest is seeing the city from another angle. For a longer outing, make the walking itself the focus and resist adding too many fixed appointments afterwards. The Split sightseeing overview helps put Marjan alongside the palace and promenade without treating every stop as compulsory.

Keep a distinction between a route on a map and the route available on the ground. Local notices and barriers should determine the final choice of path. A report dated 1 February 2026 described partial closures for tree work on Šetalište Marina Tartaglie and in woodland north of Vodosprema, Sedlo and Promatračnica, without a fixed reopening date. For a walk through those areas, look for the current notices rather than relying on that earlier report alone.

Bene and access on bus 12

Bene combines pine trees with a shore that is partly sandy and partly rocky. It can be reached on foot or by bus 12. The park administration describes the line as Zvončac to Bene and back to Zvončac. Use the current timetable to arrange the outward and return journeys, especially when matching a bus ride to an activity meeting time. Plan pedestrian or bus access instead of expecting a visitor car route to the shore.

A separate road tunnel maintenance notice covered 23 October 2026 at 17:00 until 25 October at 19:00. That was a dated tunnel closure, distinct from the woodland work described in February. For today's outing, pay attention to signs relating to the actual path or road being used. Keeping the two notices separate avoids mistaking a past road diversion for a description of the whole walking area.

Water sport and kayaking as an alternative

The local guided sea kayak activity starts at Bene and lasts three hours. Its included services are the sea kayak and equipment, a local guide and insurance. Choose it when the activity on the water is the point of the outing; choose the walk when viewpoints and woodland are the priority. The meeting place is Bene, so a beach stop near the city port is a different arrangement. This is not a Bačvice departure.

Park rules to build into the day

Open fires, camping, disturbing animals and leaving rubbish are prohibited in the park. Dogs must be kept on a lead, and parking belongs on designated spaces. Apply these rules to the whole outing, including breaks near the shore. Carry what is needed for the walk and take rubbish away, rather than planning a camp or a fire as part of a longer stay on the peninsula.

For a day centred on the coast, compare Bene with the sandy shore at Bačvice and the pebble beach at Kašjuni in the beach guide. That choice is about access and the type of shore, while a Marjan outing is about the walking route and landscape. Pick the main purpose first, then add a shore stop if it fits comfortably into the day.
