Split Tours: City Walks, Islands and Day Trips

Split tours range from palace walks to a food-focused afternoon or a full island day. Choose by the experience, meeting point and services you actually need.

  • Palace walks and boat trips compared

Choose Split tours around your available time

Split tours make more sense when divided into city experiences and journeys away from the city. A palace walk explains the streets and buildings already around you. A food tour adds a sequence of tastings, while a lagoon speedboat or longer island outing moves the focus to the sea. Start with the experience you want, then compare the duration and included services. A tour title naming a monument is not a substitute for a stated admission ticket.

For a first city visit, a guided walk leaves room to return independently to the Riva and markets. The public palace lanes are free, so the value of a walking tour lies in the guide's explanation and route. The cathedral, Temple of Jupiter and paid cellar halls are separate considerations. For a day at sea, the balance changes: the boat, skipper, equipment and length of the outing become the main points to compare.

City walks and historical interpretation

The English-language palace walk starts at the Golden Gate and takes 90 minutes with a professional local guide. It suits visitors who want a structured introduction before exploring further. The history-focused walk starts at the Brass Gate beside the Riva and takes 100 to 110 minutes. Its included headset and demonstrations with 3D reconstructions make interpretation a specific part of the experience, alongside a guide with a master's degree in history and teaching experience.

These formats have a different purpose from a museum visit. Use the palace guide for the relationship between the Peristyle, cellars and cathedral, and the old town route to connect markets and squares afterwards. For a separate comparison of city, food and boat formats booked privately, read private tours in Split. Choose a format before filling the rest of the day with extra stops.

Food as the main activity

The four-hour food walk combines history and sightseeing with food at five establishments, water throughout and a shot of rakija. A licensed local guide is included. Its meeting point is the red Split sign at the eastern end of the Riva nearest the ferry port. That makes the starting landmark different from the palace walks, even though all are city experiences. Plan the day around eating as well as walking rather than treating this as a short snack added to another full schedule.

The Pazar green market and PeΕ‘karija fish market also belong to a self-guided city walk, and simply looking around them is free. Visiting a market does not by itself include a tasting. For a fuller comparison of eating and wine experiences, continue to the food and wine page. Keep the market stroll and a booked meal-focused tour as distinct choices when deciding how much of the day to organize.

Lagoon and longer island boat trips

The five-hour lagoon speedboat includes the skipper, snorkeling equipment, wind jackets, safety equipment, bottled water and insurance. Hotel pickup and food are extra. The longer ten-hour island speedboat includes a skipper and guide, mask and snorkel, windproof jackets and safety equipment. Its Blue Cave ticket is extra, as are food and drinks. These are different commitments in time, even if both involve island stops and snorkeling gear.

The Blue Cave lies on BiΕ‘evo; the Blue Lagoon is near Drvenik. Swimming and diving are prohibited inside the cave, so do not choose a cave route as an indoor swimming experience. Sea conditions affect boat outings and cave access. The boat comparison explains the formats, while snorkeling routes put more emphasis on equipment and swimming stops.

Trogir as a combined excursion

The five-hour Split and Trogir combination includes walking tours in both places, a licensed local guide and transfer. Visits are exterior only, with entry tickets excluded. The usual Split landmark is the bronze city model at the start of the Riva; cruise days may use the port gate instead. This is useful when comparing a combined outing with a city-only walk, because the transfer and second destination are part of the experience.

Sunset and evening planning

An evening cruise is a different format from a daytime island speedboat. Decide whether you want an evening on the water or a city evening along the Riva, then leave the schedule around that choice open. The daytime boat outings presented here should be planned as daytime excursions. For overland alternatives and national park comparisons, use the day trips guide.

Questions before choosing a tour

Does a palace walk include every entrance?

Choose paid interiors separately unless a particular admission is explicitly included. The English-language palace walk includes the local guide and walking tour.

Which boat outing is shorter?

The lagoon speedboat takes five hours, while the longer island speedboat takes ten hours. Their included equipment overlaps, but their routes and time commitments differ.

Is hotel pickup part of the speedboat trips?

The lagoon and longer island speedboats described here exclude hotel pickup and drop-off. Arrange your arrival at the meeting point separately.
