Reading Split weather before choosing a month

Split weather has its warmest monthly averages in July and August, while November has the highest average rainfall in the DHMZ Split-Marjan series for 1948 to 2024. For walking around the city, May, June and September offer lower historical monthly temperatures than the height of summer. These comparisons help choose a season; the forecast for the actual travel dates should guide the daily programme.

There are different ways to describe temperature. A monthly mean combines observations across the month, while an average daily maximum describes the usual daytime high within a particular historical period. Neither is the highest temperature a visitor could encounter. Read the period and the column heading together rather than taking a single number as the temperature for an entire day.

Use this page for the climate background and the best time to visit Split guide for choosing between city walks, beaches and days on the water. If a boat excursion is the main reason for travelling, leave some flexibility in the itinerary when arranging the days before arrival.

Monthly daytime highs and lows: historical averages

The DHMZ table for Split-Marjan below covers 1971 to 2000. High and low mean average daily maximum and minimum air temperatures, rather than absolute records. Rainfall is the historical monthly average in millimetres. This older climate baseline is useful for comparison, but is not a forecast for the coming season or a description of today's conditions.

A separate record of monthly means

DHMZ also publishes the following Split-Marjan monthly means for 1948 to 2024. Keep this series separate from the daily highs and lows above: the period and the measure are different. In this record July has the lowest average rainfall and November the highest. A monthly rainfall total does not say how many days will be wet, or whether a particular afternoon will be suitable for the beach.

Use the pattern to decide what matters most. If lower temperatures for walking are the priority, compare the months on either side of July and August. If time beside the sea is the priority, remember that these are air temperatures. They do not describe water temperature, currents or bathing conditions at a particular beach.

Boat conditions and the Blue Cave

A pleasant day on the waterfront does not settle the operating conditions offshore. The Blue Cave is on Biševo, reached through a low entrance in small boats. Treat the forecast, sailing information and cave access as separate parts of planning. Use the published admission season for price planning and check access for the intended date separately.

The featured excursion includes a driver/guide, storage for belongings, a sun shade, snorkelling equipment, insurance and safety equipment. The cave ticket is paid separately in cash on the boat; water, food, drinks and beach towels are extra. Swimming, bathing and diving inside the cave are prohibited. Snorkelling equipment relates to the boat outing, not permission to swim inside the cave.

Read the Blue Cave guide for the destination and compare boat formats from Split before committing a whole day. Keep a city-based alternative available if the sea programme changes. That makes the choice about how to use the day rather than trying to infer offshore conditions from a harbour photograph.

Ferries, beaches and an adaptable day

Scheduled ferries also need a date-specific check. On 2 November 2026 the 16:30 Split to Pučišća departure was cancelled because of weather. That notice concerned one sailing, rather than every ferry leaving Split. Use the ferry guide to distinguish scheduled transport from an excursion, then check the departure itself.

For a shore-based day, choose between the sand at Bačvice, the pebble beach at Kašjuni and the partly sandy, partly rocky shore at Bene. The beach comparison explains the locations. Decide whether to swim from local conditions on the day; use historical warmth for seasonal planning and local beach conditions for the decision to swim.

Questions about the climate

Which month is warmest?

July has a monthly mean of 26.2 °C and August 25.9 °C in the DHMZ series for 1948 to 2024. These are historical averages, rather than daytime highs or a forecast.

How should I interpret November rainfall?

November has the highest average monthly rainfall in the 1948 to 2024 series, at 115.5 mm. That monthly figure does not describe the timing or duration of rain during an individual stay.

Does a sunny forecast guarantee a cave visit?

Plan around the sailing conditions and cave access as well as the city forecast. Keep another day or a city activity available, particularly when the cave is the main purpose of the outing.
